This
past Memorial Day, as Master of Ceremony, I had the distinct pleasure of
introducing my son as one of the guest speakers. (see news article at http://www.ogd.com/article/20140527/OGD/705279826
).
U.S. Army 2nd Lt Flynn was
the only active duty person in uniform at the event and was the focal point for
many of the attendees. It made me wonder
why so many service members who had experienced this immediate fame, forget the
power of appearance once they leave the military. Not only do civilians act like paparazzi when
a service member is in uniform, military respect their comrades that wear the
uniform proudly. The fact remains that
it does not matter if you are military or civilian; you have to dress for success
if you want to achieve success.
We
have all heard the importance of a first appearance our whole life. Many fail to ask “is this true?” and if it is
true, “why is true?” Without analyzing this
important advice, it is quickly forgotten.
It is TRUE, that first appearance
is very important! According to Dr. V.S.
Ramachandran of the University of California at San Diego, one the reasons is
that our mirror neuron is categorizing
other people by their appearance in an
attempt to help us understand their point of view. (http://timberry.bplans.com/2010/02/why-mirror-neurons-are-critical-to-your-business-success.html
) It is similar to the same word can be used in different contexts to mean
different things and we need to categorize the context to understand the
meaning. The brain’s way to know how to interpret
the context of your words is to categorize you by your appearance. This means that if the listener has categorized
you as incompetent, because of your attire, no amount of intelligent dialog
will make the listener think you are competent.
The reason that words are so low priority in a first appearance is
explained by a study completed by sociologist Albert Mehrabian. He discovered that a person’s appearance gets
55% of the listener’s attention. Another
38% of their attention is directed to the speaker’s tone of voice and body
langue. Only 7% of the listener’s
attention is being focused on what the speaker is actually saying. This is
a contributing factor as to why “We only remember 25% of what we hear.” (Stephen
E Lucas (2001) The Art of Public Speaking, 7th edition. McGraw Hill; New York.) We have to first evaluate someone as worth
listening to, before we will devote the mental effort of actually listening to
them.
For
this reason, job seekers always need to look like they are competent for the
career they are pursuing. This is definitely
true and well understood when it comes to interviews. The internet is full of excellent sites
explaining how to appropriately dress for an interview. What is overlooked is that a job seeker is a
job seeker 24/7. Networking contributes
to 80% of hires. If the first time the hiring
manager sees you, you are wearing a ragged outfit with flip flops in the local convince
store; that is the category they will put you in. If you ever see them again at an interview,
your category has been set to the flip flop outfit even if you are in a 3 piece
business suit. This is especially true
if you drop off an application or resume at a job site. You need to be in an attire that is at
minimal equal to what their workday dress attire is and should be at least one
level above.
At
the end of the day, if you want success; you got to dress like you are
successful.
