Reducing Stress with Learning Aids

We all have heard many short proverbs like, “the needle that broke the camel’s back,” and  “a journey of a thousand miles begins with 1 small step;” used to help us remember general truths with lengthy explanations.  Many have also used acronyms and mnemonic devices to assist us with information retention.  So it comes as no surprise that these memory tools help us with learning and remembering.  Well did you know that they can also be used to reduce stress?

This has been discovered by Cognitive Psychology Researchers as late as the 1990’s during studies of working memory.  Tests determined there is a finite amount of working memory one possesses to process information simultaneously. The volume of information being mentally processed has been labeled, “Cognitive Load.”   It has been discovered that exceeding our cognitive load capabilities results in the brain taking short cuts.  These short cuts can result in unnecessary stress.

The first short cut is to group the existing decision with something abstractly similar and base the final decision on that abstract thought.  This would be like when you have an overload of information about 2 different cars (one red and one green) you wish to purchase.  Since your brain can not simultaneously process all the comparative options, it will jump to, “Apples are red and pears are green.  I like apples better than pears so the red car must be the better choice” You then get the “gut feeling” that you like the red car better and make the purchase.

The second short cut is to tunnel focus a spot lot on only the facts you are presented with.  This is sort of like when you are at a play, and only watch the actor in the spot light even though there are many other actors on the stage.  Daniel Kahneman calls this method of thinking “What You See Is All There Is” (WYSIATI). The consequence of WYSIATI is that we evaluate only the immediate facts that are presented without considering alternatives.  This is why beef that is labeled 90% lean sounds better than if it were labeled 10% fat.  You know that 90% lean means there is 10% Fat; however by only presenting one fact, our brain never considers the other fact.   Going back to the last example of buying a car; the spotlight effect (WYSIATI) prevents you from thinking about the fact that maybe repairing your old car or even looking at other purchase options would be better than buying either the red or green car.  Buying a car is in the spot light, and all the other facts just don’t exist to you at the moment.

By now I am sure you are asking how is this going to reduce stress.  That is very simple now that you understand why you want to reduce your cognitive load when making decisions.  When faced with multiple options, the easiest way to reduce your cognitive load is to utilize the most basic training aid; “WRITE IT DOWN!”  When you make list that include all your options, you free up working memory.  This increase in thinking capacity opens your mind to alternative options.  Sort of like the play.  If it is a live performance you stay fixed on the spot light so you don’t miss anything important.  However, if you watch a recording of the play and put the film on pause, you can look around the stage and admire the other costumes and stage props.  When you write down your problems and all the associated options, you open your thoughts to alternatives that may be better than either of the yes/no options in the present dilemma.  This also allows you to take a multi solution approach to whatever problem is causing you stress.   Remember the old proverb “there is more than one way to skin a cat,” this is what it was explaining.  If you become so tunnel focused on only one approach to resolve your problem, you could be overlooking the best solution.  You cannot see these other options if you are working on “cognitive OVER load”
