Hitting the Bull’s-eye Requires a Target

We have all heard the humorous response, “you can’t get there from here!”  Well that is the reality you are facing if you want to achieve a satisfying career when you don’t have a career goal.  I am continually amazed at how many complain about not winning the lottery despite the fact they NEVER bought a lottery ticket¹. Time after time, I have a client that is discouraged because they don’t have a dream job when they don’t even know what their dream job would be and/or don’t invested any of their resources (skills, knowledge or network) to enhance their chances of getting that job.  The best explanation of this phenomena I heard, was explained by Zig Ziglar; “Howard Hill won 287 times out of 287 archery contests in his life. He could split an arrow at 50 feet. You could shoot better than him in a matter of a few hours ... if he was blindfolded and spun around. How can you hit a target you can’t see? Even better, how can you hit a target you don’t have? You must make targets in your life. The problem in life is not the lack of time, but the lack of focus or direction. The part where this gets crazy is that it is child’s play to create an initial Career Goal.  Children do it all the time! “I am going to be a ___________ when I grow up.”  If 5 and 6 year old children can do, then why does this activity paralyze adults?  This is because children take it in small steps.  They are willing to eat a hamburger one bite at a time while most adults think they have to buy the whole cow, just to try a hamburger.  The reality is these goals are started with small bites that can be use to determine what your next action will be.  Here is a very simple way to get started on creating your goals. For these steps to be successful it is vitally IMPORTANT that you keep a written log though all of the steps.

1. DREAM  - Get a piece of paper and write down all the things you enjoy doing.  If you can’t think of anything, start with a self assessment like the one on https://www.jobzone.ny.gov or set up an appointment with a Career Councilor at your local Department of Labor Office http://www.labor.ny.gov/career-center-locator/.
2. ANALYZE -  determine why you like these activities and what transferable skills are used in these activities.  A great starting list can be found at the Skills Profiler on http://www.careerinfonet.org/skills/skills_list.aspx
3. RESEARCH - Use the internet or library to explore jobs that have the same activities and skills you identified as being enjoyable.   An example would be to go to http://www.onetonline.org and type “outdoor” in the quick search box.  It will give you an extensive list of jobs that include outdoor activities.  Pick one that appeals to you. (remember this is the starting/continual part,  not the conclusion)  It will give you a full description of the job selected with links to market expectations and education requirements.  It will list other titles used for that occupation.  So for our “outdoor” example, I picked “Range Manger” from the list of provided job titles.  That selection let me know that this job is also called:

·         Rangeland Management Specialist

·         Natural Resource Specialist

·         Land Management Supervisor

·         Natural Resource Manager

·         Resource Manager

·         Range Technician

·         Wildlife Manager

·         Conservationist

·         Grassland Conservationist

·         Habitat Management Coordinator

Close to the bottom of the page, it provides a list of similar jobs. For Range Manger, the list of similar job titles are:

4. ACTION - If you have identified your career goal, then write down a scheduled date that you will proceed onto the next steps to achieve this goal.  Otherwise take your newly acquired knowledge and return to step one.  You should expect to cycle through these four steps at least four times before you have enough information to make a career goal.  Should new information or changing conditions make you ever decide that goal is not the best choice for you (I.E. You wanted a career full of travel, then during this journey you decide to start a family and now want a career without travel) go back to step 1.

1. I  use the lottery only as a proverbial example and highly discourage the wasting of financial resources on tickets of chance

The City Clerk's Office is now accepting applications for Technical Specialist.  The Ogdensburg Municipal Civil Service Commission will be conducting a Open Competitive Civil Service exam on October 25, 2014.

Interested candidates must complete a Civil Service application.  Application forms are also available at the City Clerk's Office. Please return completed applications to the City Clerk’s Office, 330 Ford Street, Room #4, Ogdensburg, NY 13669, by 4:00 p.m. on Friday, September 19, 2014.
 
Duties:  This position is responsible for the performance of duties in two functional areas.  One area involves complex clerical work coordinating grant management (financial and administrative) and is involved in pre-award stages through termination of grant. The second area involves overseeing all administrative activities in support of engineering and planning department projects.  The work is performed under general supervision with unusual situations referred to supervisors for review. The incumbent does related work as required.
There is a $20.00 non-refundable processing fee which must accompany the application by the last filing date.  Send check or money order payable to the Ogdensburg Civil Service Commission and write the exam number and the applicant’s name on the check or money order.

Job Specifics

Minimum Qualifications Two years of experience in maintenance or mechanical work under the supervision of a skilled trades-worker or completion of an appropriate two-year technical school course.

Duties Description Maintenance and rehabilitation work on infrastructure including buildings, recreation facilities, bridges, dams, access roads, trails, boundary lines, and wildlife management areas. Working knowledge of safety standards and procedures. Ability to perform moderate to heavy manual labor and lift up to 50 lbs. Ability to climb ladders and work on heights on scaffolds and platforms. Must possess a Class "B" license or get a Class "B" license within six months from appointment.

Additional Comments This position is seasonal with a duration through 3/31/15. Actual work schedule and duty requirements may vary and will be discussed at interview.
