Stress & Insomnia


It is no secret that searching for new employment can be very stressful.  Even starting that new job can be very stressful.  We have discussed in the pass how this stress can cause depression and ways to reduce this side effect of stress.  Another problem that reduces productivity that is related to stress is Insomnia.  It is really difficult to go to that job interview looking excited about the opportunity if you have not had a full night of sleep of days.  Since this is an important topic and a little outside the limits of my expertise; I have provided some highlights from reputable sources on the internet.  In addition to the highlights, I have also included a link to their web site so you can read the entire article.

Put your screens to bed

As the Chicago Tribune reports, the blue light from computer and smartphone screens suppresses melatonin, the hormone that helps regulate night sleep, and disrupts the circadian rhythms that govern our sleep-wake cycles. The effects are worst when we stare at screens at night. Remove the ever-present temptation to send one more email, make one more revision, tweet one more tweet by designating a non-bedroom spot in the house as Device Headquarters. Plug in phones, laptops, and tablets there before you start your bedtime routine — and leave them there to rest.

Write a been-done list.

The sheer number of things that need to get done is less stressful than how you perceive that to-do list, according to a 2003 study from Psychosomatic Medicine. So why not end your day with “I did” rather than “I must”: Cosmopolitan suggests taking two minutes to write down everything you accomplished, including the small tasks, gives the mind a chance to reset and settle down. (Check out idonethis, an app that makes it easy to track your daily accomplishments.

Stress and Insomnia 

Spend some time "winding down." A person with insomnia needs a "buffer zone," a period of time to allow the activating processes in the brain to wind down to allow the alerting mechanisms to decrease their activity so that the sleep systems can take over. I suggest that you start winding down 2 hours before bedtime. Stop all work and end phone calls to family and friends, as often they are activating. Watching television is all right in the evening. However, an hour before bed, I recommend reading or listening to music.
Finally, focus on conditioning yourself for different sleep behavior. Insomnia is painful for people—it can take control of their lives. When someone suffering from insomnia walks into their bedroom, they often feel anxious, uncomfortable and tense, as they know from their experience that they might spend the night tossing and turning. They need to set up a situation so that they like going to their bedroom. The bedroom should be visually pleasing and very comfortable. One should use the bedroom only for sleep, sex, and changing clothes, pleasant activities, and if awake in the night should leave the bed and bedroom and spend "unpleasant" times awake in another room. "Waking" activities such as working on the computer, talking with one's partner, talking on the phone and watching TV should take place out of the bedroom.

Learning to associate your bed with sleeping, not sleeplessness 

·         Use the bedroom only for sleeping and sex. Don’t work, watch TV, or use your computer or smartphone. The goal is to associate the bedroom with sleep and sex, so that when you get in bed your brain and body get a strong signal that it’s time to nod off or be romantic.
·         Get out of bed when you can’t sleep. Don’t try to force yourself to sleep. Tossing and turning only amps up the anxiety. Get up, leave the bedroom, and do something relaxing, such as reading, drinking a warm cup of caffeine-free tea, taking a bath, or listening to soothing music. When you’re sleepy, go back to bed.
·         Move bedroom clocks out of view. Anxiously watching the minutes tick by when you can’t sleep—knowing that you’re going to be exhausted when the alarm goes off—is a surefire recipe for insomnia. You can use an alarm, but make sure you can’t see the time when you’re in bed. 

Relaxation techniques that can help you sleep 

It takes regular practice to master relaxation techniques but the benefits can be huge. You can do them as part of your bedtime routine, when you are lying down preparing for sleep, and if you wake up in the middle of the night.
·         Abdominal breathing. Most of us don’t breathe as deeply as we should. When we breathe deeply and fully, involving not only the chest, but also the belly, lower back, and ribcage, it can help relaxation. Close your eyes and take deep, slow breaths, making each breath even deeper than the last. Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth.
·         Progressive muscle relaxation. Lie down or make yourself comfortable. Starting with your feet, tense the muscles as tightly as you can. Hold for a count of 10, and then relax. Continue to do this for every muscle group in your body, working your way up from your feet to the top of your head.

·         In May 2011, Swiss researchers at the University of Basel reported that subjects who spent time at night in front of an LED computer screen, as opposed to a screen emitting a variety of colors but little blue light, experienced "a significant suppression of the evening rise in endogenous melatonin and … sleepiness."

What Is the Treatment for Insomnia? 

Breathing exercises can promote relaxation. Here's a routine you can do anywhere, anytime:
·         Exhale completely through your mouth.
·         Inhale through your nose to a count of four.
·         Hold your breath for a count of seven.
·         Exhale through your mouth for a count of eight.
·         Repeat the cycle three times. 

Exercise 

Moderate exercise can help you sleep better and give you more energy while awake. Aim for a 20- to 30-minute routine three or four times a week. Tailor the workout to your physical condition, and exercise in the morning or afternoon, not close to bedtime. 

Mind/Body Medicine  

Meditation, yoga, and biofeedback can reduce tension and promote better sleep. Visualization or guided imagery, during which you hold a peaceful image in your mind before bedtime, is also an effective path to relaxation. You can learn these techniques from an instructor, online sites, a how-to book, or an instructional tape. 

Good Sleep Habits 

Be sure your bedroom is quiet and dark. Eye shades may help since light comes in even through closed eyelids.
Both children and adults may have trouble sleeping if they are over stimulated by activity or watching television just before bedtime. A quarter hour of quiet conversation, light reading, or soft music before going to sleep may make all the difference. Also, these steps are important:
·         Try to keep a regular sleep schedule.
·         Avoid heavy meals, smoking, alcohol, or caffeine near bedtime.
·         Keep the bedroom reserved for sleep and sex only.
If you wake up at night and can't go back to sleep, remain quiet and relaxed. Even normal sleep can be punctuated by periods of restlessness or even waking. Be patient; sleep usually returns. Remember, a few nights of poor sleep do no long-term harm. Even if you toss and turn trying to get to sleep, you are probably getting more periods of sleep than you think.

What we do: Our program provides medical insurance, wage-loss, rehabilitation and impairment benefits to Federal employees who are injured on the job or who suffer an occupational illness as a result of workplace exposure.

Our Workers' Compensation Claims Examiners review, develop and adjudicate injury and illness claims under the Federal Employees' Compensation Act (FECA). They administer medical and wage-loss benefits, and advise interested parties and provide technical information of both a medical and quasi-legal character. They prepare findings of fact, conduct, negotiate and mediate informal pre-hearings and conferences; prepare formal compensation orders and statements with recommendations for action; and they manage and adjudicate long-term disability and permanent impairment claims. The position is fast-paced and involves a high-level of responsibility and authority.

In any event, we’d like to wish everyone a safe and relaxing Labor Day weekend with family and friends.
For Veterans who are considering careers in diplomacy and international development, I want to make you aware of a great opportunity for which you may be eligible. The U.S. Department of State has launched the Veterans Innovation Partnership (VIP), a new public-private alliance platform aimed at serving America’s Veterans and separating Servicemembers by preparing them for diplomacy and development careers, providing education and employment resources and expertise while enhancing America’s global leadership.
They are currently accepting applications for the Fall 2014 class of VIP Fellows. The main focus of VIP is to build and deploy strategic partnerships between the U.S. government and the U.S. private sector to mobilize resources and build networks to promote foreign affairs career opportunities for Veterans.
The VIP fellowship will include the following components:
  • Full-time employment beginning in Fall 2014 and lasting for one year
  • Responsibilities and compensation commensurate with a Master’s degree
  • Mentoring and professional development opportunities throughout the year 
Eligibility Requirements
VIP fellowships are only open to Veterans who:
  • Are enrolled in a Master’s degree program in the preferred fields of International Business, International Relations / Affairs, Public Policy, Public Administration, or related fields (this includes MPA, MPH, MPP, MBA, and JD degrees).
  • Completed a Master’s degree in the preferred or related fields listed above less than two years prior to applying for the fellowship (except for Veterans precluded from doing so due to their military service obligation, they will have up to six years after degree completion to apply).
  • Are able to obtain a Secret Level security clearance.
  • Provide a resume. Use your resume to highlight your education, expertise, achievements and honors, extracurricular activities / community service, and any leadership experience. The resume should not exceed two pages.
  • Criteria include outstanding leadership and life experience, as well as excellence in academic, cross-cultural and communication skills. 
  • To be considered, an applicant’s cumulative GPA for the Master’s degree should be 3.2 or above on a 4.0 scale, or equivalent.

From January 2011 through December 2013, 4.3 million workers were displaced from jobs they had held for at least 3 years. This was down from the 6.1 million long-tenured workers who were displaced during the prior survey period covering January 2009 to December 2011. In January 2014, 61 percent of workers displaced during the 2011–2013 period were reemployed, up from 56 percent in January 2012 and 49 percent in January 2010.
