Navigating by the Stars to Shoot Your Career Pass the Moon

GOALS are the one thing that many successful people have in common.  The reason that goals are a key ingredient to success is because we make the things we think about, “happen!”  Goals are an ingredient for success.
http://hubblesite.org/newscenter/archive/releases/2011/11/image/a/format/large_web/
Like all ingredients, we have to make sure they are good if we want to expect the end product to be any good.  You would not expect an omelet to taste good if you made it with spoiled milk and rotten eggs.  The same is true if you are expecting a successful future with a vague goal like “to be rich.” In the previous weeks we discussed discovering our dreams which is the starting point and base for the goals we set.  You can find “Dreams Create the Magic of Life” at http://dvopmf.blogspot.com/2014/03/dreams-create-magic-of-life.html?_sm_au_=iVV0Q6r7jQMSMt7F or for a fresh view you can read “Goal Setting – Powerful Written Goals In 7 Easy Steps!” by Gene Donohue at http://topachievement.com/goalsetting.html .   Therefore, we will move on to reviewing what a quality goal consist of.

The best way to create a worthy goal is to use the universally accepted acronym S.M.A.R.T. to test its validity.   S.M.A.R.T stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Trackable.  We want to put every goal through this checklist before investing time into pursuing the goal.  The Checklist is:

  • SPECIFIC
    • What specifically do you want to achieve with clarity & focus?
      • This includes the 5 W’s
·         Who does it involved?
·         What exactly will you accomplish?
·         Where will it be completed?
·         When will you start and finish it?
·         Why do you want to accomplish this goal (reasons and benefits)?

  • MEASURABLE
    • What are the milestones that will show you are making progress?
      • This includes time and accomplishments.
·         What are your target dates?
·         What are the accomplishments that show you have reached a milestone?
·         Where will it be completed?

  • ACHIEVABLE
    • This is where you determine if it is within your reach.
      • This includes what is needed and how you will obtain it.
·         What additional skills do you need and how will you get them?
·         What additional training do you need and how will you get it?
·         How will you finance the journey?
·         How committed are you, and what will get you through the tough times?
·         How much time do you have to devote to this goal?
·         What is your support group and network?

  • REALISTIC
    • This is where you focus and clarify the details.
      • This is researching your assumptions.
·         Can you honestly expect to meet the time table?
·         Is there room for the unknown, unknowns that will delay your goal?
·         Has it been done by someone else (only for research and not as a determining factor)?
·         Do you believe that you can achieve this goal?
·         Can you manage it?
·         Is it within your physical and mental capability?
·         Is this your own goal, or someone else’s expectation of you?

  • TRACKABLE
    • This is where you build the ladder (bridge) that will get you from where you are to your goal (this is where the elephant gets eaten one mouthful at a time).
      • This includes schedules and time tables
·         What is the Long Term (15 plus years) portion of the goal
·         What is the Medium Term (5 to 15 years) portion of the goal
·         What is the Short Term (Less than 5 years) portion of the goal
·         What is the Immediate portion of the goal
·         How long will each step take?
·         Replace all arbitrary deadlines with specific dates.
·         Create a calendar/schedule that has your milestones marked in a way that you can regularly watch your progress.

Working out the details of your goals is always a good use of your time because: “Success is the progressive realization of a worthy goal or ideal.” (Earl Nightingale, US motivational writer and author, 1921-1989) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgGBcSp4Huo&feature=related
