Exciting news in today’s email that I wanted to share with you.

There is a very old adage that people Vote with their feet.  Even though this is not always true in the current turmoil of September primaries and November elections; it is true in when looking at the availability of new employment in the Job Market.   

  • An excellent indicator is “how many people are voluntarily quitting their jobs.”  “Quits are generally voluntary separations initiated by employees. Quits are procyclical, rising with an improving economy and falling with a faltering economy” (http://www.bls.gov/spotlight/2014/housing/home.htm). When the job market is good for employees: employees are quick to say good bye to their current employer for a better career opportunity.  Likewise, when it is an employer’s market: employees will tolerate less than desirable work conditions because it has a better compensation package than anything else they see currently available. 
  • Another Excellent indicator is “how many people are being laid off or discharged by their employer.” “Layoffs and discharges are generally involuntary separations initiated by an employer and are countercyclical, moving in the opposite direction of quits” (http://www.bls.gov/spotlight/2014/housing/home.htm) When the job market is good for employees, there are not a lot of layoffs because businesses are in need of employees and will only terminate the worst of employees.  Likewise it is an employer’s market when a lot of involuntary discharges are occurring.  This happens when businesses need fewer employees and are only keeping the most valuable employees and letting everyone else go.  Likewise there is high competition for the few openings so the employers can negotiate for qualified employees at reduced compensation packages.
  • The Best indicator is “Ratio between voluntarily and involuntary job terminations.”  “The ratio of the number of quits to the number of layoffs and discharges provides insight into churn in the labor market over the business cycle.” (http://www.bls.gov/spotlight/2014/housing/home.htm) While both of the previous indicators are excellent references, they only give a partial picture.  They give the whole picture.



The US Bureau of Labor Statistics sent me an email today that got me excited that there are real indicators that show the economy is returning to an employee’s market.   In 2006 the construction industry peaked with 85% of job terminations resulting from employees quitting to only 25% being initiated by the employee.  Today that has inched its way back to 50%.    


The BLS also reported that the seasonally adjusted ratio for the nation went from March 2006, with a “ratio (high) at 1.9 with nearly 2 people quitting their job for each person laid off or discharged.”  That dropped to a  low in April 2009 to a ratio of .7 which meant “ less than one person quitting for each person laid off or discharged.”  In June 2014, this ratio has risen back to 1.6 which means that more than 3 people are quitting their job for every 2 persons that are laid off or discharged. This is a real indicator that our economy is finally rebounding from the 2008 recession.


 Having said that, staying employed is still a critical step  in climbing the path to higher horizons.  Many of the Veterans I work with are currently employed and seeking better employment, and acknowledge that one of the biggest immediate challenges they have in this process, “is dealing with a difficult supervisor.”  I read an article some time back that people don’t quit jobs, they quit bosses.  Over the past year, during personal conversations, I have found this to be 100% accurate.   Even Forbes magazine has reported that 74% of employees are looking for new employment and even in this climate of business uncertainty and an unemployment rate of 6.1percent (http://www.bls.gov/news.release/pdf/empsit.pdf), more than 2.5 million(http://www.bls.gov/web/jolts/jlt_labstatgraphs.pdf)Americans are voluntarily leaving their jobs every month.(http://www.forbes.com/sites/alanhall/2013/03/11/im-outta-here-why-2-million-americans-quit-every-month-and-5-steps-to-turn-the-epidemic-around/)  They go on to explain how bosses are the primary reason for this exodus from the workforce.     So what can you do?  http://www.careerealism.com offers 6 initial steps:

My Best advice is DEVELOP   A   LONG   TERM   CAREER   GOAL   PLAN.  If you have a clear vision of where you are headed, then you can tolerate what would be completely intolerable otherwise.   When you know that this current inconvenience is a stepping stone to obtaining your dream, it really is an inconvenience that you can bear to reach your goal.  If you are just drifting through life and only living the moment, then that same inconvenience is an unbearable discomfort.  This is just one of the many reasons that you will never get your dream career if you cannot see your destination.   The most important step in achieving your dreams is to first being able to see them.  It is the things that we think about that we make our realities.

Job Summary
Supervise train crews on a freight train and coordinate switch engine crews.  Place cars to facilitate loading and unloading and the makeup and breakdown of trains in a rail yard, industrial plant, or similar locations.

Primary Activities and Responsibilities
  • Ensure compliance with all train orders, signals, and railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations, and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)
  • Review instructions from dispatchers and yardmasters, and discuss with locomotive engineer and train crew
  • Inspect all equipment on cars prior to departures
  • Receive and transmit information by radio and telephone
  • Read and understand bulletins, work orders, and switch lists
  • Assist and instruct train crews to couple and uncouple cars, operate switches, and make minor repairs to railcars, including replacing heavy couplings or air brake hoses
  • Work with customers to ensure accurate movement and placement of cars
  • Maintain awareness of surrounding area and suspicious activity to ensure rail safety
  • Operate locomotive equipment through the use of remote control device
  • Quickly and repeatedly make precise adjustments in moving the controls of a machine or vehicle to exact positions
  • Comprehend color and/or hand signals and systems
Pay Rate
$43,000 average first year earnings.

Training
You will attend six weeks of training at the Railroad Education & Development Institute (REDI) in Atlanta, GA.  CSX will pay for travel, lodging and meals.  You will complete an additional 8-22 weeks of on-the-job training at your assigned location as required by collective bargaining agreement. Qualifications
 
  • High School diploma/GED
  • 18 years of age or older
  • Valid Driver's License    
  • 2 years verifiable work experience and/or college
  • Outside work experience
  • Experience working on an on-call basis
  • Experience working varying shift schedules
  • Experience operating heavy equipment
  • Medium to Heavy Work, lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally and up to 83 pounds on a rare basis
  • Stoop/bend/kneel/crouch/crawl/balance/climb
  • Work in cramped, confined, enclosed, or awkward places
  • Ride on the outside of rail equipment for long periods of time
  • Walk long distances over uneven terrain
  • Demonstrate auditory and visual acuity/tracking/inspection
  • Must meet color vision requirements as described in the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) Regulations
  • Verbal comprehension (Understand oral and written communications--both general and technical)
  • Communication skills (provide clear instructions/directions)
  • Reasoning skills (problem solving and troubleshooting skills)
Employment Conditions
  • Work safely to prevent on the job accidents and injuries
  • Wear protective equipment including hearing protection, safety-toe boots, or safety glasses
  • Work hours may include a nonstandard workweek, overtime, and various shift work, including on-call 7 days a week, 24 hours per day, with extended periods of time away from home and short rest between assignments in accordance with the hours of service regulation
  • Work hours are based on seniority - new hires will work primarily nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Must be able to report to work safely with two-hour notice
  • Complete annual training and pass safety operating rules examination
  • Federal regulations require random testing for drugs and/or alcohol
Must pass all required assessments
Must pass a background screening
  • Strict disciplinary policy regarding inability to report to work within proper time frame, or failure to accept a call for work
  • Advance to engineer position when required, based on seniority
