No
question about it, December is a difficult month to search for work in the
traditional manner. Nevertheless, it
offers more networking opportunities than most months. Since 80% of everyone employed is employed
because of someone in their social network, make sure you maximize on December
networking opportunities. Here are some tips on how to make the most of
December:
- Attend a variety of events
- Always introduce yourself
- Don't emphasize your job search, but do note what others do for a living
- Carry business cards, but use them sparingly
- Express interest in others and ask for permission to call after the new year
- Go easy on the alcohol - you're "on duty" after all
- Clothes; casual social event or formal dinner people assume a lot of your personality from the clothes that you wear.
- Confidence; military taught you how to stand tall and look assured of yourself. Slouching and general aloof attitude gives you the appearance of laziness.
- Courtesy; manners can be a deal breaker. Engage in small talk and show interest by listening carefully to the other speakers.
- Over all make sure you enjoy yourself.
When
you get home make sure to update your job search journal about the people you
made contact with and if you made any plans to contact them in January. This
will give you a jump on the New Year and make you feel better about the slow
pace of December job search.
When
attending events from casual to formal remember the 3 C’s while job searching. Employers and contacts are all human and base
a lot of opinions on first impressions.

The day after Thanksgiving is the traditional start
of the holiday shopping season and has been hailed the beginning of the
Christmas Shopping Season. We are now mid Holiday Season. In addition to making your holiday gift list,
also include your holiday job wish list.
We are in the prime hiring season for many retailers and other service
provider employers that hire additional help to get through the holiday
season. This is your opportunity for
potential employers to find out they want you on their staff full time. Besides getting your foot in the door you may
get additional employee discounts to boot.
Most importantly, go out and contact the places you’d like to work
for. If you wait to see a job posting,
you may never see it listed.
Some employers only list at their place of work or don’t need to list at
all because someone came in to fill the vacancy before they needed to list it.

 The Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Business Act, signed into law by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo on May 12, 2014, allows eligible Veteran business owners to become certified as a New York State Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Business (SDVOB) in order to increase participation in New York State's contracting opportunities.The Act creates the new Division of Service-Disabled Veterans' Business Development (DSDVBD) within the New York State Office of General Services for the establishment of a statewide certification program. The Division will be responsible for certifying eligible SDVOBs, and assist and promote the compliance of SDVOB participation in the state's procurement activities. |
